Light and Darkness

You would not believe your eyes
If ten million fireflies
Lit up the world as I fell asleep

‘Cause they’d fill the open air
And leave teardrops everywhere
You’d think me rude

But I would just stand and stare

I squinted my eyes as an oncoming vehicle passed by. This street is so dark the only source of light are from the vehicles that pass through. I turned around and chose a different path. There might be some unknown and dangerous elements lurking in the dark here somewhere.

This is what’s funny about darkness: once we get too comfortable or get too accustomed to the absence of light, any sliver of light will hurt our eyes.

Imprisoned_by_ReirdenOur room is one example of a darkened room. Our windows are made of wood and galvanized iron panels that made it really dark at night.  At night, falling asleep is easy once you turned off all the lights. One night, I set my phone to charge. Usually when my phone is charging, a small LED light will turn red to indicate that it is gathering power. I tried to go to sleep after plugging in the charger but it took me a while before I could really sleep. The LED light was not so bright but I could see everything around me in the room.

In the same manner, any small sliver of light will illuminate a darkened room. A small spark or a small LED would make a totally dark room brighter.

A sinner who has never seen the light of God’s love would feel the gravity of his wrongs once exposed to the light. It will surely hurt. It will surely make you feel less of a person, weak and powerless. Hardened criminals are allowed to feel this so they could realize their crime. That is why it is called being convicted. You get so blinded by the light, you become a changed person. You are convicted for your sins and have decided to change.

Jesus spoke to the people once more and said, “I am the light of the world. If you follow me, you won’t have to walk in darkness, because you will have thelight that leads to life.”

John 8:12

No matter the amount of light that you receive, the power of Christ is that strong that even a small amount can leave a lasting impression to our sinful dispositions. A tiny amount of truth about Christ’s saving grace is enough seed to change a man. This living light after all moves and grows. It grows until you realize that you are slowly changing. That is why we call it conversion because we are given chance to change our ways.

The point of the matter is: do not fear the light. Do not embrace darkness either. It may hurt for a little while but if you squint and adjust your focus, you will discover that the light is actually comforting. You will discover that the truth has really set you free from sin. You will discover and be overwhelmed because none of us deserves the light yet it is here. None of us actually deserves the truth and yet it is given to us.

Jesus told him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one can come to the Father except through me.

John 14:6
